Y6 Tram 7 ¼” gauge Ready-To-Run 0-4-0

Built here at MRW this is a powerful little locomotive with a 24V 1HP motor powered by two lead acid batteries. Each axle is chain driven from the motor meaning the Y6 in 7 ¼” gauge has all 4 of its wheels powered. Simply add batteries and enjoy a loco which looks great and works perfectly. The model has been sold into many countries and has proved to be a robust and reliable performer equally at home, on the club track or garden railway.

For the 5” version of this loco please see a separate listing.

The Y6 trams were developed by the Great Eastern to operate along the unique Wisbeach and Upwell Tramway built across the fens in east anglia. The original locomotives were steam powered but the department of trade required all locomotives running on the railway to be fitted with cowcatchers, steel side aprons and a bell which are included in the model. All of the features make for a very unusual British steam engine!

These locos were not just limited to the Wisbeach and Upwell tramway they were also employed for use at Colchester, Ipswich and Yarmouth working on their respective dockyards. Originally just three Y6’s were built but such was the demand during harvest season that more were built during 1891-1897. These rather unique looking Y6 locomotives survived until 1952 when they were replaced completely by Diesel Drewry shunters.

Famously the locos were depicted in the Rev. W.Awdry's Railway Stories Thomas the Tank Engine. Interestingly Awdry lived near the Wisbeach & Upwell Tramway and he based the character Toby the Tram on one of the engines. None of the original locos survived into preservation but they are still a well known and popular loco due to their uniqueness and association with Toby the Tram.

Coupling options

As standard the locos are built with traditional sprung buffers and “hook & chain.” If required a multi height slot narrow gauge coupling can be fitted the rear

Sound systems

A “chuff chuff” sound effect can be fitted to the loco to give a realistic aspect to the locomotive's operation to mimic the sounds of the real steam loco and whistle. The Chuff effect changes with the speed of the train and responds to the input from the controller.

Electronics and controls

The loco are fitted with two tone car horns which give a clear audible warning to anyone within 20m+ of the loco to warn of approach. The loco runs on 24V requiring two 12V batteries housed inside the locomotive when running. (note batteries are not included)

The locomotive is controlled from a handset which is ergonomically designed to ensure comfortable daily use. The locomotive utilises a dead man's feature so that it will stop if the controller is separated from the driver. The locomotive is fitted with a 4QD controller.  All aspects of the loco’s wiring and electrics are professionally fitted to give you peace of mind that the loco will perform correctly and reliably when it arrives to join your growing fleet of locos.

Details about the design and manufacture

The generous spring allowance gives a comfortable ride and allows the wheels to absorb undulations in the track whilst remaining firmly on the rails. The wheel sets are CNC machined in the UK then pressed and locktighted to the axle. The laser cut frames are powder coated whilst the mechanism is bare metal. The high quality of build in the wheelsets mean that everyone is consistent and will give many years of reliable use.

Intended use

This loco is designed to be used as a “hobbyist loco” it does not have completely waterproof electronics and the components are designed for light irregular use as associated with clubs or home gardens. The loco has not been designed with the intention of daily use and the components have not been specified or designed to be used on a daily basis. If you are looking for a “commercial” locomotive for daily use please consult our larger more industrially built locos and please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your requirements.
