This is an unpainted set of parts to make a simple and very effective coupling for bar couplings. The design is totally weld free - the tabs for the pin are held captive between the front plate and the buffer beam. The couplings come as single slot or two slot multi-height versions. Pins sold separately.

Weld-Free Pocket Coupling Kit

This is an unpainted set of parts to make a simple and very effective coupling for bar couplings. The assembly is bolted to the buffer beam of the Loco/Coach/Wagon of your choice and this holds the assembly together. The design is totally weld free - the tabs for the pin are held captive between the front plate and the buffer beam. The couplings come as single slot or two slot multi-height versions. Pins sold separately. These couplings are designed for Medium Duty (8mm pin), Heavy Duty (10mm pin) and Super Heavy Duty (12mm pin) applications.

Installation

The block will arrive as a set of parts joined by a small tab of metal. Twist the parts apart by hand and file off the excess material until smooth. After this, simply drill the buffer beam to accept the holes for the plates, assemble so that the pin receptors are captive between the front plate and buffer beam, and bolt to the loco or rolling stock. It can then be painted for appropriate appearance. Fasteners are not provided as buffer beam thickness can vary significantly.

For positioning and height, aim to keep a consistent mounting height across rolling stock to keep coupling bars level and reduce unnecessary vertical forces which can lead to derailments. Medium duty require M4 bolts, heavy duty require M6 bolts, and super heavy duty require M8 bolts.

Weight each (KG): 0.3-0.8kg
Material: Mild Steel

Please note; we aim to dispatch these items next day, please note if purchased with a long lead time item we will hold this item and dispatch as one order unless otherwise agreed.

This listing is for a single product, select the type of products you require from the drop down menu. If the item is out of stock or you wish to place an order please contact us.

Couplings come unpainted and may pick up some light surface rust in storage. We recommend you paint the product to protect it against corrosion.

Coupling blocks should always be used in conjunction with a locking pin and safety chain, in accordance with relevant guidance. For more on miniature train operation please look at our Safety page.

Safe Use

Items can be used with 7 ¼ , 5, 3 ½ - Consideration should be given to the expected load on the coupling bar thicker versions are available for high loads.

We do not provide information about the tensile strength of these couplings, they are cut from Mild Steel. It is your decision as the end user what is an appropriate load for the bar as many factors could come into play which may affect their strength. For heavy trains you may wish to use a thicker bar, we are looking to provide more coupling bars of various thickness and sizes please contact us for more information.

It is the operator's responsibility to ensure the day-to-day safety of the railway. For more information about this please consult the HS2020 guidelines from the Passenger Carrying Miniature Railway Safety Group (PCMRSG), make sure you consult their website yourself, so for the latest version go to:- www.pcmrsg.org
