A handcrafted full-sized GWR gauge glass lamp ready for use on heritage railways, large miniatures or ready to be used as a display item.

A full size reproduction lamp to hang on the lamp bracket attached to GWR gauge glasses. In the dark, this allowed firemen to see the level of water in the gauge glasses. These lamps ran on rapeseed oil originally due to the heat next to the firebox, so paraffin would burn too quickly making it unsuitable. Nowadays, lamp oil is the appropriate fuel to use for this item. There is also a red aspect on these lamps allowing crews to communicate easily and carry out shunting manoeuvres as they have the ability to stop drivers.

These lamps are commonly used on evening services on heritage railways as the light is not too bright and is appropriate for looking authentic. The burner is optional, priced at £25, allowing the choice to illuminate via modern or traditional methods. With this burner you will need to purchase lamp oil separately. These lamps should fit most GWR locomotives due to the standardisation of the lamp brackets that were applied to the gauge glasses. This means that you can operate this lamp on most GWR locomotives in preservation easily as the brackets are standardised. Our lamps are able to be painted at home ready for use on locomotives if you wish.

Nick is the Norfolk Tinman, he has spent his career working on preserved railways with a wide range of experience of all aspects of locomotive repair. Working for many years as a Fitter at the North Norfolk Railway and volunteering on the footplate as a Driver. He uses his own oil feeders and Tinsmith products on the footplate and we approached him to make a scaled down version of his traditional products. After some time hand cutting and forming the tinplate, Nick produced for us an excellent range of scaled down footplate equipment.

This is a full-size piece of footplate equipment that can be used by adding lamp oil to be used on the footplate. Alternatively, this item would be appropriate for display purposes for any railway enthusiast.
