A steam cylinder oil which is ideally suited for saturated and superheated steam applications for either miniature or heritage use. The 680 steam cylinder oil, which is a medium viscosity steam oil, usable for all steam engines working up to cylinder pressures of 225lbs according to Morris. But the 680 is ideally suited to locomotives with cylinder pressures of 175lbs with superheating and we recommend this oil for most miniature and full size steam locomotive engines which are regularly superheating.

The compound aspect of the name relates to its ability to work well in wet conditions, for example when a steam engine has been left to stand for some time and water has condensation in the cylinders. The “compound” oil formulation is made from a special cylinder oil stock treated with fatty compounds and tallow in particular to provide superior lubrication even if wet conditions are encountered. The fatty compounds form emulsions which spread the oil on the internal surfaces, providing a strong lubricating film where needed to protect bores and valves. This is particularly important where very wet steam has to be handled at the cylinders, or water treatment chemicals are carried within the steam.

The oil can be delivered through displacement, hydrostatic or mechanical lubricators to the cylinders and this oil is also recommended by Morris for use as a general bearing oil. As a bearing oil this can be applied either mechanically or via an oil can/feeder, but the higher viscosity of the oil compared to some bearing types will mean it will not flow as freely at room temperature. If used as a bearing oil then gently warming the oil in the morning may prove helpful.

Is 680 enough, should 1000 be used?

Only locomotives under mainline conditions such as continuous long periods of superheating and high loads would be recommended 1000 grade and the 1000 grade is not recommended for pressures less than 175 psi. This means the 680 is the go-to oil for all heritage and miniature steam engines with superheating.

Important Note: These oils must not be used where the steam is being recovered for use as a boiler or process feed and complete separation from oil is essential.
