We have been using Vallorbe 8” files in our production of portable track for nearly a year and can not fault their performance and longevity. Even after continued heavy use the files remain sharp with a very good cutting face. Following on from this, we decided to test out some of the Vallorbe needle files and have been likewise just as impressed.
As with any file, keeping the teeth free from debris with a wire bush is periodically required and so keeping them in their proper case is wise to avoid them rubbing against one another. Vallorbe are world leaders in metalworking files and have a wide range for numerous sectors, including industrial, forestry, jewellery, watchmaking, blacksmithing and luthiery. The files we have selected are well suited for Model Engineering and general Machinist tasks but we can source a wide variety of files for our customers from Vallorbe’s extensive catalogue. If you are looking for a specific file for a metalworking application, please do contact us to find out how we can help.
File cut fineness
The files listed on this page are either Bastard or 2nd cut files which are an appropriate general use file for the engineer. The 2nd cut is coarse enough to remove a lot of material but fine enough to give a reasonably smooth finish. Other types of file are shown below and we can obtain these from Vallorbe as per customer’s requests.
Bastard
A rough cutting file for large amounts of material removal.
2nd cut
A medium cut which sits in the middle of the coarse and fine cut files to give a good all rounder.
Fine - Available on request
A smooth file that is ideal for finishing and removing a very small amount of material.
We can source most of the range of engineer’s files from Vallorbe, so take a look at their full catalogue here for more info https://www.vallorbe.com/file.cfm?cmsfile=&contentid=5102

Vallorbe is a town in Switzerland and is where all Vallorbe files are made. Unlike a Swiss pattern file which is a term used to describe files files made in the Swiss style, these are actually branded Vallorbe and are made in the town itself in Switzerland.
Vallorbe are widely used in jewelry and there is an excellent video which explains more about their use in jewelry. Vallorbe Files: An Overview

Using the files
The files are suitable to be used with almost any material which can be cut with a hacksaw. The materials cut will obviously affect tool life but we have found them to be long lasting with regular use on mild steel.
How are the files made
There is an excellent old promotional video for Vallorbe here showing the manufacturing process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsT_e7s2bfU
