These handy gauges are ideal to check trackwork for conformity and help identify any gauge problems or excessively worn railheads. They are also excellent for use when building track as a quick gauge checker both in the workshop or out on the railway in a working party. These gauges have been developed by MRW in our Nottingham workshop and cover all standard 3 1/2” gauge standards for railhead width.
When operating a railway periodic safety checks are imperative to ensure that the trackwork is in a suitable condition for carriage. These gauges can be placed between the railheads to check that they conform with the standard and identify potential issues. They feature both standard 3 1/2” and gauge widened 3 1/2” for curves. The MRW standard for gauge widening is 3 69/128” (+1 mm / 5/128 over 3 1/2”). The widening reduces railhead and wheel profile wear and allows longer wheelbase rolling stock to traverse curves with a reduced likelihood of derailment.
Cut from 4mm mild steel, the gauges are robust and will last well if kept in a dry environment. Being laser cut, they are accurate to +-0.1mm. They also feature a handy hanging hole for peg boards etc. in the workshop. The true gauge side and gauge widened side are clearly marked with text cut into the gauge to avoid any ambiguity.
